Marie-Hélène's Trip to Haïti

Visit to Hospital and its Staff

July 2007 was Marie-Hélène's first visit to Haïti to meet the Director and the medical staff of Hôpital Sainte Croix in Léôgane. During her visit in Léôgane she also had the opportunity to meet a few health agents in the region who are trained to deliver some health services to the community and to give some assistance to the traditional birth attendants before they attend deliveries.

Marie-Hélène visited the Centre Materno-Infantile of Léôgane and met with the family planning nurse who showed her the different contraceptive methods used to teach women about family planning. She also went to some remote areas of Léôgane: Darbonne, Grande and Petite Rivière to visit Darbonne's Community Health Center and to visit outdoor health clinics in these areas.

The Situation in Rural Haïti

The state of poverty of the people is very noticeable. Unemployment is very high and living conditions are harsh. In the photo in front of the pharmacy Marie-Hélène is standing in front of a mother who is breastfeeding her baby while waiting to see a doctor from Hôpital Sainte Croix.

The outdoor clinics are usually taking place in one of the community's health nurse house like in the picture below.

In the photo at the bottom, Marie-Hélène is with a pregnant mother who was very weak because she has malaria. She was going to take the bus to go to another town to stay with relatives.
