Health Conditions in Haiti

Health care needs in Haiti are enormous. It is estimated that no more than half of the population has access to the most basic health services, and many of them have never visited a medical facility. Therefore, treatable health conditions can become fatal.
The rate of maternal mortality, an important indicator of a population's state of health, is estimated at 670 deaths per 100,000 live births -- the highest in the Caribbean and the Latin America reflects the dreadful situation in Haiti.

In the rural areas the health conditions are far worse. Obstetrics services in the rural areas are inadequate, and prenatal care is still an exception rather than a regular service. It is estimated that 80 per cent of women living in rural areas have never received prenatal care, and are still giving birth outside the health care system. Unsafe and unsanitary delivery is still practiced in the rural areas, and health care and obstetric facilities are inadequate.

Long walking distances to reach medical facilities and the inability to pay for medical services prevent poor women from seeking and receiving proper medical care.
